What Sets the Figure on a Turkish Orthodontic Quote
Five factors, and the appliance is not the first of them. Understanding the order makes two quotes comparable in a way that comparing appliance names does not.
How far the teeth have to move. Mild crowding resolved in months is a different treatment from comprehensive alignment across two years, and the difference is in appointments, aligner count and laboratory work rather than in anything conceptual.
Whether the bite is being corrected as well as the teeth arranged. Moving the arches into a different relationship — with elastics, and in severe cases with surgery — is a substantially larger treatment than lining teeth up.
Whether extractions are part of the plan, which adds both a procedure and considerable movement afterwards to close the spaces properly with the roots upright.
Then the appliance and the laboratory work behind it. Aligners carry a planning and manufacturing cost per set; fixed braces carry chair time across adjustment appointments — the comparison of what each can move is the clinical half of that decision.
Where restorations are also planned, the two budgets interact. A restorative quote built after alignment is frequently smaller than one built before it, so the sequence changes the total rather than only the timetable.
Orthodontics is also the treatment where your home country matters most, because the appointments continue after you fly back. Readers in the UK and Ireland are close enough for interim visits to be practical; from Australia the plan has to be built almost entirely around remote monitoring, and we would rather say that at the quote stage.
The Lines a Complete Quote Contains
Nine, and two of them are the ones that turn a quoted figure into a larger actual one.

Ask specifically about the seventh and eighth. Both are normal parts of treatment rather than complications, and a quote that excludes them is quoting for an incomplete course.
Ask which of the nine are included as a single question rather than one at a time. A clinic that has planned properly answers all nine in one message, and the ones it cannot answer are the ones worth pursuing.
Refinements Are Normal
The line most often missing, and the one patients are most surprised by, because the word implies something went wrong.
Teeth rarely follow a digital plan exactly. Bone density varies, some teeth move faster than others, and a plan built for an average response meets an individual biology. The gap is closed with a further set of aligners.
A new scan is taken of where the teeth actually are, a revised plan is built from that position, and additional aligners finish the job. A majority of comprehensive cases involve at least one such stage.
So the question is not whether refinements will be needed but whether they are included. A clinic that claims they will not be needed is describing simple cases or is not being straightforward.
Fixed appliances have their own equivalent: treatment running longer than planned, and the additional adjustment appointments that implies. Ask whether those are chargeable too.
The same logic applies to attachments and interproximal reduction. Both are normal parts of aligner treatment rather than additions, and what each is for is worth understanding before they appear on the day.
Retention Is Part of the Treatment
The second commonly missing line, and the one whose absence causes the most eventual disappointment.
Teeth drift for life. The fibres around each tooth retain memory of the previous position for years, and without retention they pull back towards it — slowly, and in a way most patients do not notice until it is obvious.
A bonded retainer is a thin wire fixed behind the front teeth. It is invisible, requires no active effort from you, though it does need cleaning under daily, and needs checking periodically to confirm it has not debonded at one end.
A removable retainer is a clear shell worn at night, indefinitely. Most plans use both, with the bonded wire on the lower front teeth where relapse is most likely.
Retainers also wear out and are replaced over the years. That is a small recurring cost and it is the price of keeping the result — most adult relapse comes from stopping rather than from failed treatment.
A bonded retainer needs its own cleaning routine. It collects deposits behind the front teeth where a brush reaches poorly, so cleaning under it becomes daily — otherwise it protects the alignment while quietly costing gum health.
What Comes Before Any Movement
Two things, and neither is negotiable. Both are frequently absent from a quoted figure because they are findings rather than choices.
Gum health. Orthodontic force applied to teeth with active periodontal disease accelerates bone loss, and adults are far more likely than teenagers to have it undiagnosed because early gum disease is silent.
Full charting at the first visit is how it is found, and where disease is present, treatment and a period of stability come first. That delays orthodontics by months rather than ruling it out.
Decay and failing restorations second. Brackets bonded over decay, or aligner attachments bonded to a crumbling filling, produce problems partway through that are far harder to address with an appliance in place.
Neither of those is an upsell. They are the foundation, and a quote that has not accounted for them was produced without an examination.
Where recession has already occurred, the direction of movement matters too. Pushing a tooth outward through a thin plate of bone worsens it, which is a planning constraint read from the scan rather than a reason to avoid treatment.
How Complexity Is Assessed
From records rather than from a photograph, and the assessment is what makes a quote meaningful rather than provisional.
A panoramic radiograph shows roots, bone levels and any pathology. A lateral cephalogram shows the skeletal relationship between the jaws, which determines whether the problem is the teeth or the bones carrying them.
That distinction sets the ceiling on what any appliance can achieve. A dental problem is correctable with orthodontics alone; a significant skeletal one is not, and pretending otherwise produces a compromised result.
A digital scan and photographs complete the picture, and from those a plan is built showing each tooth's path from where it is to where it should be.
A quote given from photographs is a range at best. It cannot know whether the roots are healthy, whether the bone will permit the movement, or whether the problem is skeletal.
Any previous orthodontic records are worth bringing. Old models, retainers or photographs show where the teeth were and how far they have relapsed, and relapse cases are frequently the quickest and least expensive treatments there are.
The Cost of Treating It Restoratively Instead
The comparison that matters more than braces against aligners, and it is frequently framed the wrong way.
Veneers can make crooked teeth look straight in a fraction of the time. They do it by removing enamel from every tooth involved, permanently, and committing each of them to being restored for life.
Orthodontics takes months and removes nothing. Attachments and brackets are bonded and removed with nothing lost, and at the end the teeth are in a better position and otherwise exactly as they started.
For a young patient with sound unrestored teeth, that trade is rarely worth taking. The apparent saving in time is paid for in tooth structure that does not come back — the full comparison of approaches sets out where each is appropriate.
There is a genuine exception. Where the teeth in question are already crowned or heavily filled, the argument reverses and restoring them directly is both faster and no more destructive than their condition already implies.
Where a single space rather than general crowding is the complaint, the calculation is different again. Closing a midline gap can be done by moving two teeth or by bonding them, and both are far smaller than a comprehensive plan.
Aligning First Reduces What Follows
An economic argument for orthodontics that is rarely made and frequently decisive when a restorative plan is also being considered.
Teeth in the correct position often need only whitening and a small amount of bonding to look right. The same teeth left crooked need veneers to disguise the position, and that means more teeth treated and more preparation on each.
So a plan that aligns first frequently ends with two or four restorations instead of eight or ten. The orthodontic cost is real and the restorative saving is frequently larger.
It also produces a better result. A veneer designed for a tooth in the right position can be a natural shape; one compensating for a rotation has to be a compromise, and compromises show.
Which is why alignment belongs in the design conversation rather than being considered separately — how the two fit together sets out the sequence.
It also changes the whitening decision. Aligned teeth are easier to clean and whiten evenly, so the shade result afterwards is better than it would have been with the same treatment on crowded teeth.
The Arrangement for a Patient Travelling
This changes the practical comparison substantially and it is where aligners pull ahead of fixed appliances for reasons that have nothing to do with the dentistry.
Fixed braces need adjustment every four to eight weeks, and a loose bracket or a poking wire needs attention within days. For a patient living in another country that is a genuine logistical problem.
Aligners are issued in batches. Several months of them can be provided at once, with progress reviewed remotely from photographs and in-person visits concentrated at review points.
That usually means two or three trips across the whole treatment rather than a monthly appointment — how the schedule is arranged sets out the visit structure in detail.
It also affects the figure. Fewer in-person appointments means less chair time, though the aligner manufacturing cost is unchanged — so the saving is smaller than the reduced visit count suggests.
Plan the review points around trips you were making anyway where possible. Combining an orthodontic review with another treatment visit is common and it removes most of the additional travel from the treatment.
It also fits alongside other treatment. Aligner review points can be combined with restorative appointments on the same trip, which is why orthodontics rarely needs to delay the rest of a plan.
Treatment Time and What Extends It
Relevant to cost because a longer treatment means more appointments, more aligners or both.
Simple crowding or relapse commonly resolves in months. Comprehensive treatment involving extractions or bite correction runs eighteen months to two years, with either appliance.
Adult treatment tends to take longer than adolescent treatment because bone remodels more slowly. That is biology rather than a difference in appliance or effort.
With aligners, wear time is the largest variable and it is entirely within the patient's control. Under-wear does not slow treatment proportionally — the sequence stops tracking and new aligners have to be made.
Accelerated protocols exist and their evidence is mixed. A well-planned case moves at a predictable rate, and offers to dramatically shorten that deserve scepticism rather than a premium.
Missed or delayed review appointments extend it too, and for a patient travelling that is the commonest cause. A review that slips by two months adds two months, because the next batch of aligners cannot be issued without it.
Comparing Two Orthodontic Quotes
Normalise before comparing, because two figures for orthodontics are less comparable than in almost any other treatment.
- Establish what each plan is actually correcting — alignment only, or the bite too.
- Check whether extractions are part of either plan.
- Check whether refinement aligners or extended treatment are included.
- Check whether retention is included, and which type.
- Check whether retainer replacement over the years is discussed at all.
- Find any gum treatment or restorative work needed first.
- Count the in-person visits each requires and over what period.
The first is the one that most often reveals two different treatments. A plan correcting the bite and a plan lining up the front teeth are not the same work, and only one of them is a comprehensive treatment.
The third and fourth are where a lower figure grows. Both are normal parts of treatment, and both frequently sit outside a headline number.
Where the two plans differ in what they are correcting rather than in price, that is a clinical disagreement worth resolving on its merits. Ask each clinician what the cephalogram showed and why they reached different conclusions.
When Orthodontics Is Not the Answer
Worth being direct about, because it is over-prescribed in some contexts and under-offered in others.
Where a significant skeletal discrepancy exists, orthodontics alone camouflages rather than corrects. That may be an acceptable outcome and it should be described accurately rather than presented as full correction.
Where periodontal support is substantially reduced, moving teeth carries real risk. Treatment may still be possible with light forces after stabilisation, but it is a different proposition and needs saying.
Where the teeth involved are already extensively restored, moving them to restore them again achieves little — restoring directly is both faster and no more destructive than their state already implies.
And where a patient will not wear aligners twenty-two hours a day, aligner treatment is not suitable regardless of the malocclusion. That is worth establishing honestly at the start rather than at month four.
Age alone is not on that list. Adults are treated routinely and the biology is the same, only slower — what changes the answer is gum health and existing restorations rather than the number of years.
Where teeth are missing as well as misaligned, the plan spans both. Space has to be opened or closed deliberately depending on what will fill it, and the replacement decision belongs alongside the orthodontic one rather than after it.
Orthodontics When You Live in Another Country
Orthodontics is the one treatment on this site where travelling is genuinely awkward, and saying so plainly is more useful than pretending otherwise.
